Welcome all members to the 2009/2010 Ski Season
The Club Executive and Committees have been meeting and planning with program organizers strategizing in advance of what is sure to be an eventful and exciting season for our club. The white stuff is inching its way down the mountains and even dusting up the local trails at Panorama and Nipika Mt. Resorts.
We have seen a great build up of energy within the club with new members taking on important roles and responsibilities. I would like to welcome our new and returning executive members and committee heads that were elected at our Oct 15th AGM.

November 26- 7-9 pm – TCNSC Open House at Columbia Cycle

For the 5th consecutive year the TCNSC is providing a great night to kick off the ski season. Columbia Cycle has graciously opened their doors for the evening, 7 to 9 pm, where cross country ski enthusiasts can participate in a waxing clinic, enjoy the latest ski videos, pick up new ski gear or get your family fitted for seasonal rental gear. You can also take this opportunity to enroll in the upcoming season’s programs, such as Rabbits, Adult Learn to Ski, or Classic and Skating Clinics. We will also be registering memberships for the season which will allow you to take advantage of Lake Windermere Whiteway and super deals at Nipika, Panorama and Columbia Cycle.

*Lake Windermere Whiteway *

The club is excited to offer the Lake Windermere Whiteway in our back yard again this year after a successful last year. With the numerous grants and funding acquired through the insight of Nick Berzins, the club will have a new 84 inch Ginzu Groomer and new Skandic skidoo to set both Classic and Skate skiing on the Lake. Ice skating will also be provided over the 20+ kilometers of valley mountain view trails. Help give the club and Brad Kitching, our dedicated trail groomer, your support by becoming a club member and encouraging others to become members so that we can continue to maintain and improve this valuable community opportunity.
The Grand Opening of the Whiteway will be on Dec 27th where the club will be offering a free clinic to tune up your skills. So encourage all your friends and family to dust off their skinny’s from the basement and come out to enjoy the festival and free public ski clinic.
Contact Chris Paget (cmpaget@telus.net) if you can lend a hand with the Whiteway. Beware of the new signage and hope for consistent cold weather.

Greywolf Nordic Center-Panorama

Greywolf is committed to improved grooming again this year. All of the 30 km of trails will be set for both classic and skate skiing out to the Hale hut and outer loops. The Hale hut has been stocked and is ready for use. Thanks Rob Gordon for your hard work! Cross country ski passes and annual passes will be available at the Greywolf Nordic center.

Nipika Mt. Resort.

As always, Nipika Mt Resort, located a mere 40 min east of Radium Hot Springs, is already fine tuning the trails in anticipation of early snow. Nipika offers local skiers the opportunity to escape to a true wilderness setting and enjoy classic or skate skiing on perfectly groomed trails. Again this year, Nipika will be offering TCNSC members discounted season trail passes for anyone signed up for a TCNSC membership before Jan 1st. This is a fantastic offer that allows members to ski at a great location for competitive rates.

Banff Film Fest- Jan 10th

The club has taken over the organization of the Banff Film Festival this year and it will be hosting this event at the Invermere Community Hall. Combined with the films will be a chance to sample a selection of wines and spirits. Doors open at 6PM with films starting at 7PM. Stay tuned for ticket sales or contact Heather Lang (langh@telus.net) to lend a hand or gather more information.

TCNSC Skate Loppet and Nipika Classic Loppet- Jan 23 and Jan 24th, 2010

As an exciting new twist to our local loppets, the club skate loppet and the Nipika classic loppet have combined forces to offer a back to back loppet festival weekend. Come to Nipika for the annual classic ski loppet on Saturday with a new course every year and distances for recreational skiers, children, and racers there is something for everybody! On Sunday, enjoy the Toby Creek Nordic Ski Club’s annual skate loppet. Rich in tradition, this loppet is a great family event. Also enjoy the festival banquet on Saturday night in Radium to tie it all together. Don’t miss this growing event!
Please contact Chris or Lyle at info@tobycreeknordic.ca if you would like to volunteer.
For your convenience, participants can sign up early here TCNSC Skate Loppet, Nipika Classic Loppet. Hope to see you there.

Junior Rabbits Programs- Jan- March 2010

The club continues to provide an active Rabbits program that is part of a nationally recognized program of introducing kids (and parents too) to Nordic skiing in the Columbia valley in a safe and fun manner. Come join us this year and have fun, increase fitness, learn valuable skills, make new friends and develop a positive self image! Not to mention the hot chocolate and healthy treats!
Our certified coaches will be offering three main programs this year. The Bunny program is for 4-5 year olds and will be run as a parent and tot class. (Don’t worry, parents don’t need to have skis but are encouraged to try as well). The Jackrabbits program is for 6-9 year olds who are eager to get skiing and have fun! The Track Attack program is for 9-12 year olds and is designed to promote physical development of our young skiers. For more information and registration forms check out our Programs section (provide link) or contact Rich McLeary (richmccleary@shaw.ca). We encourage families to become involved in this healthy active winter program.

Adult Programs

Ski Clinics
The club will again be hosting a one day technique tune up for both skating and classic skiing this season. Lyle Wilson will be providing his national ski team expertise to help you out on the trails. The clinics are open to all, but come at a reduced rate to TCNSC members. Depending on snow, the clinics will kick off with the classic clinic on Dec. 13th and skate clinic on Jan. 3rd and will be held at Nipika Mt Resort. Contact Lyle Wilson for more details at info@tobycreeknordic.ca
Adult Learn to Ski
For the third year, the adults have a chance to learn this fabulous sport or just improve your skills. The club will be offering drop in sessions starting on Sundays in January at Nipika Mt Resort. Qualified instructors will get you up to speed with some basic skill techniques, waxing tips and get you ready to take on the longer scenic trails the valley has to offer. Contact Lyle at info@tobycreeknordic.ca for more information and start times.

Club Memberships
Club memberships for this season have increased over last year to support the continued maintenance of the Whiteway but the fee continues to be a great deal! The club has taken on the responsibility of establishing and maintaining the Whiteway so encourage traditional non-members that use the Whiteway to help pay for this fantastic facility. This year’s fees are:
$30 for an individual
$80 for a family
$5 drop in fee for Whiteway.
Membership fees cover the Cross Country BC insurance and membership fees. Members will benefit from: – Annual pass for Whiteway – Annual subscription to CCBC Ski XC Magazine, – Discount for local ski clinics – Discount for club loppets – Discount at Nipika Mt Resort – Free year end BBQ
